Second-half surge lifts Vaqueros over Oxnard

SBCC used a 17-5 run midway through the second half to build a 10-point lead and went on to beat Oxnard 65-55 in a WSC North women’s basketball game at the Sports Pavilion.

Francesca DeAngelis came off the bench to score 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. Chelsea Hewitt added 12 (on 5-6 shooting) with five rebounds while point guard Jake Kelly had nine points, eight assists and six steals to help the Vaqueros (11-10, 3-1) move into sole possession of second place.

SBCC won for the fourth time in five games, despite losing Kelly, who picked up her fifth foul with six minutes to play.

Mara Lux had nine rebounds, giving her 29 in the last three games.

The Vaqueros led 21-18 at halftime after holding the visitors to 19 percent shooting and forcing 20 turnovers. Santa Barbara made just 28.1 percent in the opening half with 14 turnovers.

“We fixed our problems from the first half,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “This team has to learn how to play for 40 minutes. We’re great in spurts.

“I’m so proud of Chelsea, stepping into the starting lineup and scoring 12 points. And Mara, who’s been playing hurt all year, was also outstanding.”

The Vaqueros will host Hancock on Saturday at 5 p.m.
