David Lane had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists Wednesday night but SBCC couldn’t hold a 13-point second-half lead and fell to Oxnard 77-73 in a WSC North men’s basketball game at the Sports Pavilion.
“We go on these drives where we’re scoreless and the other team is getting easy buckets,” said Lane, who made 8-19 shots. “It just keeps snowballing the wrong way. We need to get that strong stop and execute on offense to stop their run.”
Lucky Teeguarden added 12 points (on 4-9 3-point shooting), Daniel Koches had 11 and Willie Reese collected eight points, four rebounds and five assists. The Vaqueros (4-14, 0-4) suffered their eighth straight loss.
Philip Holmes scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half for the Condors (9-10, 2-2).
“The big difference was at crucial times, we didn’t take care of the basketball,” said SBCC coach Morris Hodges. “I remember after two timeouts, we came out and turned the ball over, leading to runouts. It’s hard to defend the turnover.”
SBCC was 10-36 on 3-pointers and only got to the free-throw line five times, getting outscored 18-5 from the charity stripe.
The Vaqueros opened on a 19-10 run and led 36-30 at the half. The lead grew to 49-36 on a triple by Daniel Koches with 16:02 to play.
Oxnard used a 15-3 run to pull within one, then put together a 14-3 outburst to take a 69-63 lead with 5:18 to go. SBCC responded with 10 straight points on layins by Reese and Chris Vines, a three-point play by Lane and a 3-pointer from Vines.
The Vaqueros’ 73-69 lead was short-lived, however, as Oxnard scored the final eight points of the game.
SBCC will entertain Hancock on Saturday at 7 p.m.
