SBCC ends lengthy losing streak

It was a night of firsts for SBCC on Saturday night in the Sports Pavilion. The men’s basketball team posted its first Western State Conference win, its first victory of 2010 and snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 91-78 victory over county rival Hancock.

Sophomore guard Daniel Koches also enjoyed a couple of firsts with career highs of 20 points and six 3-pointers in seven attempts for the Vaqueros (5-14, 1-4). Lucky Teeguarden added 14 points, four rebounds and five assists while Willie Reese had 14 points and eight boards, including five offensive.

Teeguarden drained four treys on a night when the Vaqueros made a season-high 15 in 43 attempts. They also produced 25 assists on 34 baskets. SBCC hit nearly 54 percent in the first half and led 50-28 with seven players between five and nine points.

“When they play zone, we have a bunch of guys who can knock down threes,” said Koches. “Steve, Dave, Lucky … everyone can pretty much knock down threes. And our 5-man is banging inside getting offensive rebounds.

“We’re not a team that really has one amazing player. We just play together.”

Steven Saenz contributed nine points, nine assists and three steals for the Vaqueros, who got a pair of triples from Koches in the first four minutes and built a 20-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Saenz.

One minute earlier, 6-1 guard David Lane (9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals) made a steal and got the crowd going with a one-hand jam.

The lead grew to 35-15 on a three-point play by Myron Jackson. The Vaqueros led by 24 a couple of times in the second half and enjoyed their biggest lead at 87-62 on a steal, layin and free throw by Lane with 3:14 to play.

The Bulldogs (2-17, 0-5) finished on a 16-4 run to make the final score closer.

“We were very unselfish and did a great job of moving the ball,” said SBCC coach Morris Hodges. “We’ve been playing hard, there’s been a lot of close games. It’s gratifying to see them play hard and get a win.

“We got the lead and then we continued to be smart and play defense and execute on offense. I think our press rattled them and got them out of their offensive flow.”

SBCC will hit the road for its next three contests, starting Wednesday at first-place Cuesta.
