San Marcos went 1-1 on its first day of the Bonita girls water polo tourney, crushing La Salle 13-1 before falling to Riverside Santiago, ranked No. 2 in Division III, 12-4.
Flo Chardon picked up a hat trick against La Salle, and despite falling behind 7-1 in the first quarter to Santiago, the Royals battled back to end the day with three strong quarters.
“They were just a really physical, strong team. It was almost like playing Santa Barbara High,” said coach Brian Roth.
Ashley Wagner had three goals on the day, including one against Santiago while being mauled at the two-meter position. Shannon Orr had a pair of steals in the final and Brittny Hummel played a solid all-around game, according to Roth.
The Royals (13-9) play three games on Saturday.
