While every other outdoor Channel League event has been canceled this week, San Marcos and Ventura managed to get in a girls soccer game Thursday on the Cougars’ turf field.
Each team earned its first point in league after a 0-0 draw.
It was not surprising that San Marcos head coach Lloyd Biggs said play was affected by the rain, which was falling during the game.
Neither side was able to put together many quality chances as a result, with the Royals getting closest right at the beginning and then not again until near the final whistle.
Vicky Uribe set up Jenny Ann Martinez with a goal at the start but Ventura’s goalie did a good job of forcing the shot wide. Martinez had another go at it late but was turned away from six-yards out.
Kaylin Koopmans posted the shutout without having too much pressure thanks to Missy Robertson, Chelsea Friedman, Rachel Venturino and Caroline Vance.
San Marcos (0-5-1, 0-2-1) won’t end up losing any time from this week as the Royals make up Tuesday’s game with Dos Pueblos on Saturday at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium. The girls varsity game begins at 4 p.m.
