No. 1 Stanford ends Gauchos’ Norcal appearance

BERKELEYNo. 15 UCSB (4-3) finished action at the Northern California Invitational by splitting a pair of games with Sonoma State and No. 1 Stanford. The Gauchos captured a 13-2 victory over the Seawolves before falling to the top-ranked Cardinal, 15-5, later on Saturday morning at Cal’s Spieker Aquatics Complex.

In the first game of the day, UCSB climbed out to an early 2-0 lead over Sonoma State before pushing that lead to 6-1 by halftime. In the third quarter, the Gauchos posted six unanswered goals to take their biggest lead of the game at 12-1. The two teams each recorded a goal in the final period as UCSB captured the 13-2 win, its largest margin of victory so far this season.

Unfortunately, the tides changed for the Gauchos in the second game of the day. Stanford jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first quarter and stretched its lead to 8-2 at half. The Cardinal outscored the Gauchos 7-3 in the second half to capture the 15-5 win over UCSB.

Sophomore Elle Quane, freshman Kilee Dreyer and junior Claire Buchanan each tallied three goals on Saturday for UCSB.

The Gauchos will be back in action next weekend when they head to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational being hosted by the Tritons Feb. 6-7.
