Candace Melgoza was simply untouchable in the second half of Bishop Diego’s girls soccer match against visiting Villanova on Thursday.
The senior captain scored four goals in a 20-minute period as the Cardinals beat the Wildcats 5-0.
“She’s been our captain for three years and there’s a reason for it,” said coach Brent Gonsalves. She just felt it like any athlete when they get in the zone.”
The match was scoreless at halftime, but Melgoza scored unassisted 30 seconds into the second half and the barrage began. She was assisted by Allison Carr in the 51st, Selena Schmidt in the 54th and Brooke Gignac in the 62nd.
Gonsalves pulled Melgoza after the fourth goal, and Jordan Price added the fifth in the 76th minute. Kim Ruiz also made a pair of big saves, according to Gonsalves.
The Cardinals are now 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the Frontier League.
