Gregg Luna received a nice birthday present from his Laguna Blanca girls soccer team on Wednesday, as the Owls picked up a 3-0 home win over Condor League-foe Thacher.
Lauren McAlister gave Laguna the lead in the 15th minute on a shot from the left side. Erin Stone added a goal of her own before halftime, blasting one into the top corner from 35 yards out.
“It was amazing. I don’t even think the goalie saw it coming,” said the birthday boy.
The Owls went into the break having out-shot the Toads 8-1, but it was a different story to start the second half.
“I’ve gotta give credit to Thacher. They came out firing and controlled the midfield for the first 15 minutes, but our defense played so well that we stayed on top of them,” said Luna.
He highlighted the defense of Kelsey Douglas, Izzy Greer and Flavia Costea in particular.
Fifteen minutes into the half, Stone sent a ball to Becca Braly for a breakaway goal to end the day’s scoring.
Laguna (8-3-1, 3-1) hosts Pasadena Poly on Saturday before playing Cate next week in what could be a battle for the league title.
