Dos Pueblos’ Chuy Lopez placed sixth at the prestigious Temecula Valley Invitational, which attracted 88 teams.
Lopez was seeded 11th but defeated the No. 8 and No. 6 seeds by technical fall and pin, respectively, to advance to the fifth-place match. Lopez wasn’t able to compete in that match because he needs to keep his season total under 40.
The tournament is called “Battle for the Belt” as each winner receives a UFC-style championship belt.
The Chargers return to Channel League competition on Thursday when they host Santa Barbara.
