Lions make Warriors look tame

Oaks Christian didn’t show any leniency on Friday night, jumping all over Carpinteria 75-32 for a Tri-Valley League victory.

The Lions improve to 5-0 in league while the Warriors fall to 1-4 after both teams completed the first round of play.

“I was actually really proud of my kids. We just didn’t play very well in the first quarter,” said Carpinteria head coach John Ward.

Oaks Christian took advantage, starting the game on a 20-0 run and building a 41-10 lead by halftime. The Warriors didn’t help themselves out, turning the ball over 21 times in the first two quarters.

Chas Bryan recorded a team-high 15 points for the Lions, who had six players score at least seven points.

Carpinteria, led by Manny Rodriguez’s 21 points, only has seven players on its roster.

“They’re double and triple-teaming Manny all game long,” recalled Ward, who wasn’t surprised his star forward still managed a game-high in points plus nine rebounds, three steals and a block.

Ward also credited John Bustillos and Trevor Madden, who had five points, five rebounds and three assists, with having good games.

“I don’t think it will be 40 next time, we’ll do better,” Ward said, looking down the road to when the two teams play again the Warriors’ last regular season game.

First, Carpinteria has two road games ahead next week. Wednesday is Santa Clara – the only league win for the Warriors so far – and Malibu, who beat Carp in overtime in their first meeting.
