Key offsides call goes against Bishop

Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team was an offsides call away from getting a point in its Frontier League opener on Tuesday. Instead, the Cardinals were forced to settle on a 2-1 defeat to Santa Paula.

Candace Melgoza scored her second goal of the game late in the second half on a pass from Allison Carr, but it was called off by a disputed offsides call.

Melgoza had scored her first four minutes earlier off another pass from Carr, halving a 2-0 Santa Paula halftime lead.

“We had great opportunities,” said Bishop Diego head coach Brent Gonsalves, who was pleased with his team’s showing despite the loss. “We hit the post in the first half. Had we buried that shot, it would have been different. ”

The Cardinals (4-7) host Villanova on Thursday in their next league match.
