Hummel’s big performance leads Royals to OT win

Brittny Hummel scored five goals and had six steals while guarding San Diego State-bound senior Orla Brazell as the San Marcos girls water polo team defeated host Long Beach Poly in overtime on Thursday, 15-14.

“This was perhaps Brittny’s best all-around game of the year,” said coach Brian Roth of Hummel.

The Royals gave up the first two goals but battled back to tie it. San Marcos had a 9-6 lead in the third quarter but the Jackrabbits surged and took a one-goal lead before Zoe Kirker, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, scored the equalizer with less than two minutes to go.

Hannah Koper also had a huge game for the Royals, scoring four goals and drawing a pair of 5-meter penalty shots and three ejections.

On Friday, the Royals play in the first round of the TYR Cup at El Dorado High School. Thier first matchup of the tournament will be against Laguna Hills at 4:40 p.m.
