San Marcos’ girls water polo team rebounded from a hard-knock semifinal loss at the TYR Tournament on Saturday to take care of business in the third-place game.
The Royals were thoroughly handled by the Bishop’s School 13-4 before securing third place with 9-6 victory over Northwood. San Marcos went 3-1 at the tournament to improve its overall record to 11-6.
The Bishop’s School, from San Diego, pinned the Royals down 8-1 by halftime of their semifinal clash.
“Bishops is a good team and it was a great learning lesson for our girls,” said head coach Brian Roth, who said his highlight was seeing Sarah Switzer score her first varsity goal.
“(She) was moved up over the holiday break when several girls were injured,” Roth explained. “Since that time she has improved dramatically and added depth to our line up.”
Against Northwood, six different Royals scored, led by Brittny Hummel’s four goals. Rose Koper added two scores, while Hannah Koper, Emilia Wakamatsu and Flo Chardon found the back of the cage once each.
Hummel was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the four games.
“I think Brittny is one of the most improved players in the Santa Barbara area,” Roth said.
The Royals return to Channel League play on Thursday up against long odds as they face 17-0 Dos Pueblos.
