Fillmore flags Carpinteria for a loss

Carpinteria’s girls basketball team lost out to visiting Fillmore on Thursday night, falling to the Flashes 53-43 in a non-league contest.

Caitlin Wallace put up 24 points and 17 rebounds for the Warriors, who led 24-21 at halftime.

“It was a hard-fought game,” said Carpinteria head coach Dan Mercer. “They’re a physical team and deeper than us.”

Victoria Ayala topped Fillmore with 19 points while Conchita Meza poured in 16 more. Jazmine Galvez also reached double figures with 11.

The Flashes came out strong in the third quarter and outscored the Warriors by eight to turn the game around.

Amanda Burch tossed in 13 and Jenny Leonard made two field goals.

Carpintera, 7-5, has one more non-league game on Saturday against Cate before beginning Frontier League play on Tuesday.
