Francesca DeAngelis’ offense and SBCC’s defense were too much for Cuesta on Wednesday as the Vaqueros posted an 80-57 women’s basketball win in San Luis Obispo.
DeAngelis, a sophomore guard, had 31 points, six rebounds and five steals for SBCC (13-10, 5-1), which capped the first round of WSC North play with its third straight win. They’ve held opponents to 54.3 points during the win streak.
Point guard Jake Kelly added 16 points (on 6-9 shooting), six assists and three steals.
“We rotated five-in and five-out to keep our legs fresh,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We rotated our defenses to keep them off balance. All 13 players got in the game and 11 scored. Anytime that happens, I’m a happy coach.”
Giovanna Aplin had 12 points and Mara Lux contributed seven rebounds and three steals. Krul praised the defensive efforts of Aplin and Chelsea Hewitt, the WSC North Player of the Week.
DeAngelis hit 7-of-9 free throws and scored 16 in the first half as the Vaqueros built a 42-27 lead. SBCC hit 47.4 percent for the game and forced 33 turnovers.
The Vaqueros, winners of six of their last seven, return to action on Saturday at Moorpark.
