Francesca DeAngelis scored 20 of her game-high 32 points in the second half Wednesday night as SBCC routed L.A. Pierce 72-51 in a WSC North women’s basketball game at the Sports Pavilion.
DeAngelis, a sophomore guard, hit 12-of-19 from the field and came up two points shy of her career high. She also had seven rebounds and seven steals. The Vaqueros (10-9, 2-0) shot 48.3 percent in their third straight victory.
The game was expected to feature the top two scorers in the WSC but Pierce’s Tess Williams (19.9) suffered an injury in Tuesday’s practice and didn’t play. DeAngelis boosted her average to 20.3 to regain the top scoring spot.
Brittany Stephenson added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Vaqueros while Jake Kelly, the WSC North Player of the Week, had 10 points and seven assists. Mara Lux contributed nine rebounds and six steals.
SBCC took control with a 6-0 run to end the first half, capped by Jasmine Johnson’s bank shot at the buzzer that boosted the lead to 38-30.
DeAngelis scored six straight points midway through the second half, stretching the Vaquero lead to 55-41. Stephenson followed with two driving layups, boosting the lead to 19 points.
Santa Barbara will play at Ventura (20-1, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, on Saturday at 5 p.m.
