Dos Pueblos’ girls water polo team and Santa Barbara’s boys soccer team are starting 2010 with a No. 1 CIF ranking thanks to the year’s first set of polls released on Monday.
There was no chance the defending CIF-champion Chargers would lose their preseason No. 1 ranking in Div. I after putting together a perfect 11-0 record so far this season. DP’s schedule has been filled with victories over the section’s top teams and a tournament title at Newport Harbor’s Holiday Cup.
Santa Barbara’s boys soccer team didn’t have quite the preseason clout that the Charger poloists did, but nobody can argue with the Dons’ No. 1 ranking in Div. II after compiling a 18-0 mark so far this season. The Dons have been dominant too, outscoring their opponents 70-5 overall while recording 11 shutouts.
The run has not gone unnoticed as Santa Barbara is currently ranked No. 2 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Ventura, ranked No. 5 in Div. II, visits Peabody Stadium on Thursday at 5 p.m.
CIF Polls were released for the first time this season in boys and girls basketball, with San Marcos’ boys team debuting in the seventh spot in Div. III-A and Santa Barbara’s girls team sliding in at No. 6.
Jarrod Bradley’s Royals are off to a 14-3 start overall and have won their first two Channel League games against Buena, ranked No. 15 in Div. III-AA, and Santa Barbara. San Marcos’ one game this week is a Friday night matchup with Dos Pueblos at Sovine Gym.
Andrew Butcher’s Dons are 15-4 overall after finishing off a three-win week on Saturday with a 47-46 last-second victory over Rio Mesa. Santa Barbara takes its three-game win streak into Tuesday’s Channel League clash against undefeated Ventura, ranked No. 2 in Div. II-AA behind Brea Olinda.
Bishop Diego found itself at No. 8 in Div. V-A while Laguna Blanca is No. 11 in Div. VI-AA.
On the boys side, Carpinteria made it at No. 14 in Div. IV-A and Bishop Diego claimed the 16th slot in Div. V-A.
Carpinteria’s boys soccer team, which defeated Dos Pueblos last week 3-1, is No. 9 in Div. IV with an 8-1-2 record.
Santa Barbara’s girls water polo team’s 7-5 record against a tough schedule makes them No. 5 in Div. I. The Dons and the Chargers host many of the top teams in CIF at this weekend’s Tournament of Champions.
There was not a new poll in wrestling, which has Dos Pueblos as Div. V’s No. 5 team in the latest poll released on Dec. 18, 2009.
