Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team may have suffered a 4-0 Frontier League loss at Santa Paula on Thursday, but the Cardinals were in the game until the final minutes.
Santa Paula, also the Cardinals, scored three times in the last eight minutes to turn a 1-0 game into a rout.
“When we gave up the second goal, I think we just mentally collapsed,” said Bishop head coach Brent Gonsalves, whose team faces league-leading Malibu on Saturday.
It will be the third game this week for the Cardinals, holders of a 2-3 record in league.
Gonsalves said Bishop Diego played an even game up until the end.
“We did a lot of attacking, we just didn’t find that back of the net,” he said. “It was a good game till the 72nd minute.”
Kim Ruiz made seven “massive” saves in the game.
Saturday’s game is at 11 a.m. at Bishop Diego.
