A win comes in a loss for Carpinteria soccer

Yes, the Carpinteria girls soccer team lost to Oak Park on Friday.

But the Warriors had never scored a goal in program history (about two decades) against the Eagles, so a 4-3 defeat was nothing to frown upon.

“I’m so proud because we buckled down despite having a small bench and had a great match,” said coach Lucy Carleton.

Ally Winn grabbed a steal in the very first minute and was fouled in the box. Yadira Saldana took the penalty kick and converted it as the Warriors went up 1-0. The Eagles then scored three unanswered.

Maritza Torres intercepted a pass from the Oak Park keeper and put it back as the Warriors cut the Eagles’ lead to 3-2. Oak Park scored to make it 4-2, but Jocelyn Gamez found the back of the net just before the half to make it 4-3.

Torrey Rasmussen made some big saves in the second half to keep the score where it was, and Carleton also highlighted the play of Shirley Benitez. Unfortunately, Winn went down with an ankle injury in the second half and it is not known whether she will be able to return this season.

The Warriors are now 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Frontier League.
