Wounded Owls can’t fly against Toads

Christmas Break can’t come soon enough for the Laguna Blanca boys soccer team, which fell 4-0 to visiting Thacher on a chilly late afternoon in Hope Ranch on Wednesday.

“One of our captains was hurt, two other players were hurt against Bishop and during the course of this game we had to have two or three more come out. We only have three subs at the moment,” said coach Kevin Shertzer. “That makes a difference, but I don’t think it was the reason we lost today.”

Tony LochheadThe reason, he said, was that Owls (2-2-1, 1-1-0 Condor League) simply didn’t show up to play. Captain Chris Bremner agreed.

“We were missing some key players, and we just came out kinda soft,” he said. “They just came out of the gates stronger than us.”

Thacher scored three goals in the first half, including two in the final 10 minutes. The fourth score came in the final five minutes of the match, when Laguna goalie Pascal Karam made a soaring leap towards a high shot that went of the crossbar and came right back to a Toad attacker, who put it in.

The good news is the Owls have plenty of time to heal up over the break.

“We’ll have practices over the break and team meetings. We’ll come together and pick it up,” said Bremner.
