Carpinteria ended up on the right and wrong sides of a pair of 2-1 decisions Friday at the Cats and Hounds boys soccer tournament in Atascadero. The Warriors (2-1-1) defeated Atascadero in their 9 a.m. game before falling to Granite Hills just a few hours later.
“I thought the boys played well. The theme for us so far is that we’re getting a lot of chances but we’re just not putting them away… I think the finishing is gonna come,” said coach Daniel Torres.
Eduardo Contreras assisted Tony Alvarez on a goal six minutes into the second half against Atascadero. The Greyhounds responded with a goal four minutes later, but Contreras buried the game-winner just two minutes after that off of an assist by Edwin Elizarraras.
Sophomore Ramiro Vega score Carpinteria’s lone goal in the second game, while Granite Hills was able to bury both of their opportunities.
Torres was particularly impressed with sophomore midfielder Muhammed Mehai, who played all 140 minutes on the day (tournament matches play with 35-minute halves).
“I was pretty impressed with his skills. He played incredible for his first varsity start,” said Torres.
The Warriors finished second in their pool and will continue in the Sliver Bracket on Saturday.
