Warriors pick up “best team win of the year”

Carpinteria girls basketball coach Dan Mercer called the Warriors’ 40-29 victory over Cabrillo in the third-place game at the Valley Christian Academy Tournament “the best team win of the year.”

Wednesday’s result improved Carpinteria’s record to 7-4.

“This is something to build on. We won three of four in the tournament,” he said.

Defense was a key part of the Warriors’ win. They contained Cabrillo’s high-scoring Tati Dunlap, holding her to nine points. “She was averaging 18,” said Mercer.

The Warriors won despite having three players foul out.

“We finished with five players,” Mercer said.

Amanda Burch was a force on offense for the Warriors, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Caitlin Wallace scored 16 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
