Joselyn Gamez sent a message to Cate on Wednesday by scoring within a minute of the opening whistle. The Rams replied quickly, answering with a goal of their own a minute later.
In the end, the Warriors pulled out a 4-3 non-conference win over the visiting Rams.
Cate took a 2-1 lead before Yadira Saldana tacked on two more goals in the first half to give the Warriors a 3-2 halftime lead.
Saldana went down with an injury just before the break, but head coach Lucy Carleton said everyone was able to step it up, holding on in the second half. Erin Harris provided the game winner, breaking a 3-3 tie by sending it over the goalie’s reach from 30-yards out.
“The whole defense played really well,” said Carleton, whose Warriors improve to 2-1 on the season.
