SBCC overcame a 16-point halftime deficit on Tuesday at the Hancock Holiday Classic and took the lead in the waning seconds before falling to Vandenberg Air Force Base 89-87 in a men’s basketball consolation semifinal.
David Lane scored 26 with five assists and Lucky Teeguarden collected 23 points and eight rebounds for the Vaqueros (4-10), who dropped their fourth straight. Those losses have come by a total of eight points.
Santa Barbara, which trailed 46-30 at the half, tied the game at 82 and 86, then grabbed an 87-86 lead with 43 seconds to go. Vandenberg regained a one-point advantage and extended it to two on a free throw in the closing seconds. SBCC got the ball back with 1.9 seconds showing but had to go the length of the court and didn’t get a shot off.
Daniel Koches added 12 points, Myron Jackson had nine and Chris Vines grabbed five rebounds.
“We came out very flat in the first half,” said coach Morris Hodges. “Our defense was poor and we dug a big hole. We came back but ran out of time.”
The Vaqueros will open WSC North play on Jan. 6 with a 7 p.m. home game against Moorpark.
