The UCSB women’s volleyball team, which made its 27th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last Friday, have more good news to report as the team announced the signing of middle blocker Katey Thompson to a National Letter of Intent.
Thompson, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, is currently at Newport Harbor High, a team that won the CIF Division I-AA title and defeated Salinas in the state championship match. Against Salinas, Thompson had a match-high 14 kills to go with two service aces, two digs and one block.
Thompson is averaging nearly 15 kills per match and almost four blocks per match. Last Tuesday night vs. Dos Pueblos in the CIF semi-final match, Thompson had 25 kills and no errors.
She’ll join a young UCSB squad that will lose only one senior in outside hitter Rebecca Saraceno.
“She is the total package,” UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory said. “She is competitive and quick and she will be ready to be an impact player in her freshman year. She has a work ethic that is unmatched.”
Thompson also competed in basketball and track at Newport Harbor. She is coached at Newport Harbor by former Gaucho Dan Glenn and she also plays for the prestigious club team, Orange County, which is coached by former UC Irvine head coach Charlie Brandt.
