Cindy Torres’ corner-kicks were awfully sharp on Friday, helping Carpinteria cut down Bishop Diego 3-1 in a non-league contest.
The Warriors collected two goals off of Torres corners, one on a Bishop own goal, the second on a perfectly placed shot that curved through the air and into the net.
“During the summer me and my cousin Ariana went practicing and it crazy how it all worked out during the game against Bishop,” Torres said, adding that she was actually trying to connect with a teammate but that the ball just seemed to “creep through.”
Torres assisted Jocelyn Gamez for Carpinteria’s other score, all three coming in the second half.
“I told her after the game she was the MVP,” said Warriors head coach Lucy Carleton, who has her team at 4-1.
The corner kicks helped to quickly turn around a game in which Bishop had led 1-0 from the beginning. Alison Carr gave the Cardinals their lead with a goal in the fifth minute.
“We lost our focus and we lost our fitness (in the second half),” stated Cardinals head coach Brent Gonsalves, whose players were returning from several days of not working out because of finals.
Gamez gave the Warriors their first lead at 2-1 and Torres extended it a few minutes later with her goal.
Carpinteria maintained momentum for much of the second half, and almost added another goal late in the game if not for two great saves from Cardinals keeper Kim Ruiz.
“They made up their mind that they needed to get it done,” Carleton said, liking Carpinteria’s second half much better than the first.
Both teams do not compete again until January.
