Kelsey Stimson went 8-for-12 from the free-throw line and scored 16 points as the Bishop Diego girls basketball team kicked off its season with a 50-47 home win over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
“It was a big game for her. She came off the bench for us as a sophomore last year but was still third on the team in scoring,” said coach Jeff Burich.
Senior post player Janelle Kohler fell a point short of a double-double, snagging 14 rebounds with nine points. Courtney Houston had both of Bishop’s 3-pointers, including a big one at the beginning of the fourth quarter which eliminated a two-point deficit.
The Cardinals (1-0) will have to drive a long way to play a neighbor on Wednesday, as they play San Marcos in the Fillmore Tournament at 6 p.m.
