SBCC staged a furious comeback in the last 17 seconds of Tuesday’s women’s basketball game at Santa Monica but came out on the wrong end of a 73-72 final.
Frannie DeAngelis scored 21 points for the 19th-ranked Vaqueros (3-3). She had a tough shooting night (7-22) but also had five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jake Kelly added 17 points for the Vaqueros, who hit 50 percent from 3-point land (11-22) but only 55.5 percent from the free-throw line (15-27).
The visitors were down 73-67 with 17 seconds left when they made a steal and Chelsea Hewitt scored the last two of her nine points off the bench. Kelly hit a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left, cutting the deficit to one at 73-72. SBCC forced a turnover with its full-court press but DeAngelis’ 6-foot shot glanced off the rim.
“You can’t play hard for 17 seconds or 2-3 minutes and expect to win,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “It takes 40 minutes of basketball and we’ve got to learn that.”
The Vaqueros could play five games in a six-day span this week. They open the four-day, 16-team Sequoias Tournament on Thursday at noon against No. 5 Fresno City.
