San Marcos retreated to a two-week break in competition with a 2-0 non-league loss to Fillmore on Thursday.
“It was an ugly midfield battle, and it just wasn’t going our way today,” said Royals head coach Brian Eisen. “I didn’t think it was going fillmore’s way either, but they did get more scoring chances and they got two goals.”
The Flashes took the lead in the 12th minute and added to it in the 70th minute while San Marcos was pushing for the equalizer.
Junior Zach Colegrove nearly gave the Royals a chance in his varsity debut, coming close to scoring off a header on his first touch.
San Marcos (5-3-1) plays again on Jan. 5 against Nordhoff, its last non-league game before facing Santa Barbara in its Channel League opener two days later.
