Kimmy Sanchez was taking the SATs and missed the first quarter but still scored 16 points, earning MVP honors as the San Marcos girls basketball team won the Fillmore Tournament with a 47-41 victory over the host Flashes on Saturday.
“This is a great way to start the season. Four-and-0 is kind of every coach’s dream, especially because the kids our coming out with so much confidence,” said coach Kristyn Miller.
It’s not as if the Royals have had it easy, as their average margin of victory so far is just over six points. They even stormed back from a 22-point halftime deficit to beat L.A. Baptist on Thursday.
“The girls showed a lot of maturity. This is the first team I’ve had that’s really willing to seal the deal,” said Miller.
Vanessa Curiel had a game-high 17 points and made All-Tournament Team while Marissa Unzueta had seven with nine rebounds.
“She’s been a big factor for us so far,” said Miller of Unzueta.
The Royals committed 23 turnovers and shot just 14-of-45 from the field but still found a way to win.
