The San Marcos boys soccer team picked up a 2-2 draw against a tough Cabrillo squad before downing Nordhoff 3-0 on Friday to move onto the Gold Division of the Central Coast Classic.
“It’s a delight to watch them play this year. In the three years I’ve been here the talent’s always been there, but I don’t have to yell as much on the sidelines anymore. They’re doing very well,” said coach Brian Eisen.
Cabrillo, which features two quick and talented strikers, went up early in the fifth minute, but the Royals’ Michael Gallop managed to get an equalizer on a breakaway in the 11th to send the match into halftime at 1-1. Once again, the Conquistadores struck early by making it 2-1 five minutes into the second, but captain Erik Gutierrez scored the game-tying goal with five minutes left, which basically allowed the Royals to win the three-team group.
Angel Fonseco sent a ball to Chris Olmedo, who made a 40-yard run through the Nordhoff defense before slipping in the first goal 15 minutes into the second match to make it 1-0. Gutierrez and Israel Vego added the second and third goals, while Efren Gutierrez notched the clean sheet in goal.
Eisen also highlighted the play of defender Ricky Lopez.
The Royals (2-1-1) play Santa Maria and Nipomo on Saturday to determine the winner of the Gold Division.
