An overtime win was followed by a loss that coach Brian Roth dubbed a “setback” for the San Marcos girls water polo team on Saturday at the Villa Park Tournament.
The Royals (3-2) lost a late lead to Upland before winning in overtime thanks to goals from Jade Fitzgerald, who had five in the game, and Brittny Hummel.
Hummel and Flo Chardon each had a pair of goals in the contest, while Rose Koper and Emilia Wakamatsu tallied one apiece. San Marcos was up in the fourth quarter, but was called for three straight ejections which allowed Upland to tie it up.
“We played just good enough to win. It wasn’t our best effort, but a win’s a win sometimes,” said Roth.
The Royals went 5-for-20 in shooting in the second game against Huntington Beach, a 13-5 loss. There were also 13 ejections called against them.
“It was a very rough outing. We just struggled playing our game and working together as a team. We’ve gotta go back to the drawing board,” said Roth.
