Royals rope in Rangers in extra time

Wednesday night was an emotional one for San Marcos for the right reasons.

The Royals were joyous after taking home a 52-44 overtime victory over the Rangers.

“We just came out with a bit more emotion and intensity than they did,” said San Marcos head coach Kristyn Miller, explaining the Royals’ 10-2 domination of the overtime period.

Kimmy Sanchez scored six of her 12 points in the extra frame, leading the Royals to their seventh win in ten games to start the season.

Vanessa Curiel and Marissa Unzueta also reached double-figures in scoring for San Marcos, which rallied from a seven-point half-time lead to force overtime.

Miller was sure to point out the defensive work from Desiree Porter-Ray and Hannah Ball on Nordhoff’s top scorer, who made only one basket in the second half after scoring nine points in the first two quarters.

The Royals can ride their momentum into the Tournament of Champions, set to start for San Marcos on Saturday at 12:30 against Oxnard at the Thunderhut.
