Jade Fitzgerald scored six times in San Marcos’ 8-6 victory at Buena on Tuesday, making the Royals winners in their Channel League opener.
San Marcos jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Buena tightened the screws, holding the Royals to only four more goals throughout.
“I thought my girls did a good job controlling the game and staying mentally focused under the circumstances,” said head coach Brian Roth, calling it a very physical game for the last three quarters.
Although Fitzgerald did most of the scoring, Roth credited Brittny Hummel and Rose Koper for doing “a lot of behind the scenes work.” Each scored once, with Hummel adding four steals and Koper four ejections-drawn.
The Bulldogs pulled to 5-3 at halftime but couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
San Marcos is now 6-3 overall while Buena falls to 7-2, 0-2.
