The Cate girls water polo team lost 12-5 in its season opener on Wednesday against a formidable opponent in Marymount, but it was an encouraging way to kick things off, according to coach Nathan Alldredge.
“It was a stark turnaround from the previous year’s result, in which we lost by close to 20 goals and were never really close,” he said. “It was a clear sign that the team could do some great things this year, and a great game to build on.”
Lexi Greenwald led the way with a pair of goals for the visiting Rams with juniors Sarah Martzloff, Sarah Park and senior captain Belle Kammer tallying one each. Senior goalie Jazmin Sherwood recorded nine saves in the contest, many of which came at point-blank range, according to Alldredge.
Cate hosts Channel Islands on Friday.
