Half of Desiree Porter-Ray’s 16 points came from the free-throw line on Friday, proving to be an important part of San Marcos’ 51-42 tournament win over La Reina.
The Royals will play for the Fillmore Tournament’s championship on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Vanessa Curiel was the next-best thing to Porter-Ray, finishing 7-for-8 from the line while totaling 15 points in the game. Marissa Unzueta added 12.
Royals head coach said foul trouble hurt San Marcos, but that it also hurt La Reina as its leading scorer, Mary Kate Jankowski, fouled out with 22 points.
San Marcos maintained a lead for most of the game, but couldn’t quite put away La Reina until the very end.
The Royals are now 2-0 to start the season.
