Oxnard’s Orozco overcomes Chargers

Dos Pueblos scored a 2-0 win over Thousand Oaks in its opener at the Buena Tournament on Tuesday, but suffered the consequences during a 2-1 loss to Oxnard later in the day.

The Chargers were hit with a red card and several injuries against the Lancers, leaving them limited for the Yellowjackets.

“We played the last 12 minutes (vs. Thousand Oaks) a man down and we had a couple of injuries as well,” said DP head coach Tovi Eliasen. “It ended up hurting us in the second game.”

Rodrigo Perez stayed on the field and helped Dos Pueblos in both games, scoring in each.  Perez gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the first game off a cross from Johnny Cruz.

“He came out of nowhere and smashed it into the goal,” described Eliasen. “From the sideline, it didn’t look like he was going to get there.”

Just before halftime, forward Ivan Luna played a ball back to Vicente Perez who cranked a 25-yarder past an outstretched goalie for the score.

Chris Castillo recorded the shutout in goal.

Rodrigo Perez pulled the Chargers even with Oxnard by scoring soon after halftime, only to have Moises Orozco score his second goal of the game three minutes before the final whistle to boost the Yellowjackets into the tournament’s semifinals.

DP (4-3-4) matches up against Pacifica on Wednesday for a chance to play for fifth place later in the day.
