Laguna Blanca finished off an impressive run in the Grace Brethren girls soccer tournament by losing in the championship match to a school about 10 times bigger than the Owls’.
After defeating Viewpoint in penalty kicks, the Owls fell to Oxnard 5-0 in the finals.
“That’s a school of 3,000 people or something like that, and they were a very good team. Plus our girls were very tired after playing so many games in the past few days,” said coach Gregg Luna. “It wasn’t as bad as the score shows. We competed well with them.”
McKenzie Scarborough scored in the 25th minute against Viewpoint in the semifinals, but the equalizer came in the 20th minute of the second half. The Owls were missing six starters, including goalie Arabella Watters, due to SAT testing, but Fiona Jessup stood in at goalie and stopped the sixth shot in the shootout.
“We weren’t expecting to play this well, but the girls just played really well,” said Luna.
Scarborough, Jessup, Erin Stone and Kelsey Douglas each made the all-tourney squad.
The Owls host another big school, Rio Mesa, on Monday.
