Elias Muñoz scored 23 points and the Bishop Diego put up 23 points in the fourth quarter to open its boys basketball season with a 69-51 win over North County Christian at the Laguna Blanca/Bishop Diego Tournament on Wednesday.
Aside from Muñoz, five Cardinals scored seven points or more.
“It has to do with our chemistry. It was our first game but we did a real good job of sharing the ball. The kids are starting to really enjoy the results that come with sharing the ball,” said coach Ray “Slash” Vazquez.
Muñoz, a guard, also made his way into the paint for 10 rebounds to go along with five steals and a block.
“We need consistency from him. He needs to be a double-double kid or at least really close to that for us,” said Vazquez.
Hayden Slaught had 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Cardinals, who host New Roads tomorrow at the Brickhouse at 7 p.m. The Cardinals will then play Besant Hill — whom they upset in fine fashion in last year’s tournament — on Friday at 2 p.m.
