San Marcos’ girls basketball team is happy to say good-bye to 2009 after a 60-36 loss to Moorpark on New Year’s Eve at the Thousand Oaks Tournament.
“We just didn’t really show up,” said Royals coach Kristyn Miller, who was still happy with San Marcos’ 10-8 preseason record despite what she thought was a lackluster final week of the calendar year. “This whole tournament, we didn’t play up to our potential.”
The Royals put themselves at a disadvantage early by staking Moorpark a 23-5 lead after the first quarter, which turned into a 37-13 halftime deficit.
Vanessa Curiel topped San Marcos with 14 points, including the Royals’ one 3-pointer. Kimmy Sanchez contributed seven points while Lindsey Hyslop and Marissa Unzueta added five each.
San Marcos did outscore Moorpark 15-9 in the final quarter.
“I’m hoping that the new year changes things for us,” added Miller, whose team clashes with Santa Barbara on Tuesday at SBCC’s Sports Pavilion.
