Mata makes it rain again in Charger victory

Jasmine Mata had her second straight big game to start the season, scoring 26 points as the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team took down pesky Cabrillo 59-56 Thursday at the Lompoc Tournament.

“It was pretty close. We kept getting eight- or 10-point leads and they were resilient. They kept coming back,” said Chargers coach Maynard Pilapil.

Mata now has 49 points in two games, and she added three steals and a pair of assists to that total on Thursday. Kristen Gowdy put up 13 points with 12 rebounds and Sarah Sessler tallied four blocks.

“I told them that it all adds up after 32 minutes… This was good for us. It was our second straight game that came down to one or two possessions,” said Pilapil.

The Chargers (2-0) play Lompoc at 4:30 p.m. in Friday’s second round.
