It was a tale of two halves on Sunday in the third-place game of the Moorpark Classic.
The SBCC women’s basketball team built a 45-32 halftime lead over Laney of Oakland, only to get outscored by 17 in the second half of an 85-81 setback. The Vaqueros, who led by 25 in the first half, fell to 6-7 with their third loss in four games.
“I’m so angry right now,” said SBCC coach Sandrine Krul. “All we had to do was rebound. With the score tied in the last two minutes, we gave up six offensive rebounds including three on one possession.”
Frannie DeAngelis led Santa Barbara with 18 points while Brittany Stephenson had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Lyndsay Bergus added 12 points and Jake Kelly had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
SBCC outshot Laney 42.4 to 34.8 percent but couldn’t overcome a 53-36 second-half deficit.
“We missed five breakaway layups in the second half,” said Krul. “This team is playing not to lose instead of playing to win. We need to become overachievers.”
The Vaqueros return to action on Thursday at 1 p.m. against L.A. Valley in the Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament.
