Lane’s 29 a moot point in loss to Butte

Sophomore guard David Lane tied his season high with 29 points on Monday but SBCC dropped an 86-85 men’s basketball decision to Butte in the opening round of the Hancock Holiday Classic.

The Vaqueros (4-9), playing their first game in 16 days, built a 49-37 halftime lead before losing their third straight game. They’ve lost those three by a total of six points, including a pair of one-point setbacks.

Lucky Teeguarden added 13 points while Daniel Koches, Edgar Pineda and Chris Vines had eight apiece. Forward Willie Reese didn’t play due to illness.

“We played great in the first half but we had a 10-minute stretch in the second half where we were really impatient and didn’t take good shots,” said coach Morris Hodges.

The Vaqueros led 85-84 in the closing seconds when the Roadrunners missed a shot, got the rebound and scored with 11.8 seconds left.

“We got a couple of shots in the last seconds and there was a whistle on our final attempt (by Vines),” noted Hodges. “The official indicated a foul but then they huddled and changed it to a jump ball.”

SBCC will take on Vandenberg AFB on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Vaqueros beat Vandenberg 78-59 on Dec. 10 in the opening round of the SBCC Classic.
