Frannie DeAngelis and Jake Kelly combined for 62 points on Friday night but it wasn’t enough to prevent SBCC from dropping an 82-76 women’s basketball decision to No. 6 Mt. San Jacinto in the semifinals of the Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament.
DeAngelis tallied a career-best 35 points with five rebounds and four assists. She hit 13-31 from the field, including 6-11 from 3-point country. Kelly, a sophomore point guard, had 27 points and seven rebounds while Mara Lux finished with eight points and seven boards.
The Eagles (10-1) won the game at the free-throw line, making 30-of-41 compared to 15-20 for the Vaqueros (7-8). In the second half, Mt. San Jacinto knocked down 26-33 from the charity stripe while SBCC made 11-16.
The Vaqueros were whistled for 30 fouls (the Eagles had 20) and Kelly, Lux and Lyndsay Bergus all fouled out.
“We led 45-38 with 14 minutes to go and neither team scored for about four minutes,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We were up 45-44 with eight minutes left and then we commited four straight turnovers and they went on a 10-2 run.
“We’re competing with every top team we play. We just haven’t got over the hump yet.”
Santa Barbara will meet No. 8 Antelope Valley in Saturday’s third-place game at 3 p.m. It will be the seventh top-20 team SBCC has faced this year.
