Efren Gutierrez had six saves, including stops on three breakaways in the first half, but the red-hot San Marcos boys soccer team cooled off a bit with a 1-0 loss at Santa Ynez on Tuesday.
The Pirates had two breakaways in the first 10 minutes and three total in the first half, but Gutierrez thwarted them all. Santa Ynez converted the game-winner midway through the second half, ending the Royals’ streak of five consecutive shutouts.
“It just seemed like we were struggling to link up in general,” said coach Brian Eisen. “I think we easily out-shot them, but it was just an ugly game in the midfield. When they got down a goal they got a little hesitant and frustrated.”
The Royals’ defense continued to play well, according to Eisen.
