First win gallops away from Dons

Arleta may be a small school from the San Fernando Valley but it’s big on talent.

William Simmons, a 6-foot-4 junior, bruised Santa Barbara’s boys basketball team for 19 points in a 48-39 victory for the Mustangs on Wednesday.

Simmons added 10 rebounds and three assists to help Arleta improve to 7-0 on the season.

The Dons, meanwhile, are still trying to get into the win column and face Righetti and Pacifica on Thursday and Friday.

“We were right there with them until the fourth quarter,” said Dons assistant coach John Slavin.

It was a fourth quarter in which the Mustangs outscored Santa Barbara 21-10 to prevent the Dons from capturing that elusive first win.

Santa Barbara featured three starters that scored 10 points each: Enrique Madrigal, Clifford Anderson and Daniel Marshall. Anderson also collected a team-high 13 rebounds to post a double-double.
