Dos Pueblos enjoyed goals from three different sources in its season opener on Wednesday, sending visiting Santa Ynez to a 3-1 non-conference loss.
Branden Tangel opened up the scoring in the third minute, finishing a play that started in the Chargers’ defensive side of the field. Eduardo Cortez heel-flipped the ball to Tangel who knocked it home from 20-yards out.
“It was a tremendous team goal,” described Chargers head coach Tovi Eliasen.
Dos Pueblos’ third goal may have been better still, as Vicente Perez hammered home a half-volley from 25-yards out on a pass from Rodrigo Perez. Irving Beltran started it all by winning a hard-fought possession battle in the midfield.
“It was a play that really made you jump out of your seat,” said Eliasen, also calling the goal “world class.”
Jonathan Cruz had given DP a 2-0 lead in the 29th minute by converting a penalty kick that was created by Rodrigo Perez, who was fouled in the box after making a steal.
The Pirates broke through with a goal on a penalty kick of their own in the 70th minute to break up the shutout.
Dos Pueblos heads to the Cats & Hounds Tournament over the weekend. Friday has two games scheduled for pool play, Paso Robles and Paramount.
