Dons split, Chargers win a pair

Freshman Kelsey O’Brien scored four goals and assisted on two more as the Santa Barbara girls water polo team opened the Newport Harbor Tournament with a 7-6 win over Long Beach Wilson.

The Bruins led 5-3 midway through the third quarter before the Dons went on a 4-goal run. O’Brien scored two during the stretch. She also drew three ejections in the game, while Charlotte Hendrix scored twice. The Dons had beaten the Bruins in quadruple-overtime a few weeks ago.

In the second game, Santa Barbara played tough against second ranked Newport Harbor before falling 12-4. The Dons were down by just two at 6-4 near the end of the third, but Newport was able to pull away.

“The score wasn’t quite indicative of how we played. It was a 3-goal game up until the very end,” said coach Mark Walsh.

Makenzy Fowler had two goals and three steals while Samantha King tallied four steal and an assist. The Dons continue playing in the tourney with two more games on Thursday.

Dos Pueblos picked up a pair of wins to move into Thursday’s semifinals, including an 8-5 win over No. 4 Edison in the Chargers’ second game on Wednesday. Kiley Neushul had three goals in the game.
