Frannie DeAngelis matched her season high with 28 points on Saturday morning and Jake Kelly had 17 points and 11 rebounds as the SBCC women’s basketball team topped Solano 70-61 and reached the consolation final of the 16-team Tom Gilchrist Invitational at Sequoias College in Visalia.
The 19th-ranked Vaqueros (5-4) were playing their second game in 12 hours, following a late-night 66-52 triumph over Porterville. They’ll play their fifth game in six days on Sunday at 10 a.m. when they take on No. 13 San Joaquin Delta.
DeAngelis hit 11-of-24 from the field and 3-8 from 3-point land and also had four steals. Kelly, a sophomore point guard, drained 4-6 triples with a team-high six steals and five assists. Mara Lux had 10 rebounds while Brittany Stephenson added 11 points and six rebounds.
“We finally put it all together against a fast, athletic, bigger team,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “It was nice to see Brittany play well and she did a great job on their post player.”
After trailing by two at halftime, SBCC won the second half 36-25. The Vaqueros hit 7-20 from 3-point range for the game while holding the Falcons without a long-range basket (0-12). They also had 18 steals and forced Solano into 31 turnovers.
“We went to a 3-2 zone at the 12-minute mark and put on our full-court press,” said Krul. “Mara’s a rebounding monster and she helped create shots for Frannie and Jake. Everybody did a little bit of everything today.”
