Cardinals put it together to leapfrog Toads

Coach Ray “Slash” Vazquez was a happy man on Wednesday night after his Bishop Diego boys basketball team played great from start to finish in a 56-34 win at Thacher.

“I think they kids are starting to realize that they have a chance to be real good this year. We had a couple little lapses nothing like we’ve seen in the past,” he said.

Senior Hayden Slaught had 16 points while Elias Muñoz had 10 points with 10 rebounds. Paul Garcia dished out four assists to go with his 12 points.

For now, the Cardinals (4-1) are basically running a 7-man rotation, and Vazquez said there was “no drop-off” in the tempo or level of play when the subs come in. Brandon Gonzalez came in and nabbed six steals while Trent Speier took a charge. Vazquez said both played relentless defense.

“We didn’t play anything but man-to-man, and our defense created a lot of chaos for them,” he said.
